Our Philosophy
The mission of Parsons Preschool is to provide a warm, caring, and stimulating early childhood environment that is safe and nurturing. It is a time of fun, warmth, security, exploration, and discovery. The school fosters self-esteem and builds confidence based on self-respect and respect for all others. We follow the “Golden Rule.” We have created a loving, trustful, and respectful environment that enables children to love, trust, and respect their parents, teachers, each other, and especially themselves. We believe in the value of human diversity and the fair treatment of all people and the earth. Students and their families feel comfortable and welcomed at all times. We view the parents as partners in the education of their children and integrate them into our curriculum, as well as integrating into our community and becoming part of it.
Our staff is professional and knowledgeable about childhood development and early childhood education. We work collaboratively with our staff, parents, and the entire community to guide our students in their learning process. We have high expectations that are guided by the developmental needs of each child, with an understanding that many of our children have needs beyond that of learning essential skills; their needs are personal and pervasive, and affect them at every level of humanity. We follow standard preschool curriculum guidelines and the New York State Common Core project. We focus on the whole child with developmentally appropriate quality education developed to meet the needs of each child. The Parsons Preschool maintains a progressive curriculum promoting learning the tools necessary to succeed in school and in life. We encourage and develop them physically, socially, emotionally, and intellectually while being part of a whole community. The goal is for students to enter Kindergarten with the necessary skills to succeed and promote lifelong learning. Our goal is to give each child the opportunity to succeed.
There have been numerous changes in the world of education at all levels, from preschool to graduate school. Parsons Preschool is in the forefront of these changes as we transition from mere playtime to serious instructional strategies to help our students learn and grow so that they are better able to compete in the world of education when they graduate from our school and enter Kindergarten. The following are some of the curriculum programs were have implemented at Parsons:
- Fundations – Fundations is a preschool and early childhood language/reading development program based on the famous Wilson Language Program. It is systematic and based on a multisensory approach to learning letters and sounds through phonics, and then decoding and blending words together. This program was initially implemented during the Summer 2013 session, and the children are already experts in their letter and corresponding sounds.
- Highscope – Highscope is a multisensory math program based on the New York State approved common core curriculum for preschool math instruction. The program consists of fabulous manipulatives and a 50 unit curriculum that will be scaffolded weekly to give the children multiple opportunities to integrate the concepts.
- Kidsparks – Kidsparks is a yearly science and social studies curriculum based on the New York State common core curriculum. This is a full year’s program of study incorporating crafts, interactive lessons, health, and play. Children will learn all about the world around them and be involved in hands-on activities to explore their world.
- Brain Gym – Everyone knows the importance of physical activity. Brain Gym goes many steps beyond by using the concept of “crossing the lateral” to improve cognitive ability through physical activity. These activities are fun while also helping to improve the student’s ability to think better by bringing together the two halves of the brain. Every morning begins with this as part of the opening activities.
- Fun – Our day at Parsons is not all work and no play. Play is a very important part of learning, and our students not only play, but they play well and learn to play well together cooperatively. They learn to share, respect their fellow students, teachers, and themselves, and learn to be a part of a larger organization.
Every day is an adventure at Parsons. We will be having many annual events to which parents, guardians, grandparents, friends, etc. will be invited to attend. Some of these events are a Halloween parade, winter holiday party, Valentine’s Day, Spring parade, Mother’s and Father’s Day events, graduation, Fourth of July Parade, and a Carnival to end the year. Many other events are in the making. In addition, we will have Parent/Teacher
